Critics Consensus

High Life is as visually arresting as it is challenging, confounding, and ultimately rewarding - which is to say it's everything film fans expect from director Claire Denis.

High Life | Rotten Tomatoes (1) Sophie Monks Kaufman Little White Lies All I can say is that it's a pleasure to have my reviewing faculties blown and my psyche splintered by this master filmmaker. Rated: 5/5 Dec 23, 2019 Full Review High Life | Rotten Tomatoes (2) Donald Clarke Irish Times There is much of Tarkovsky's Solaris in the main body and the flashbacks... could be lifted straight from the same director's Stalker. High Life is, however, stuffed with Denis' characteristic philosophical derangement. Rated: 3/5 Dec 21, 2019 Full Review High Life | Rotten Tomatoes (3) Mark Kermode Kermode & Mayo's Film Review It goes out into the universe to look in...it is first and foremost a film by Claire Denis. May 22, 2019 Full Review High Life | Rotten Tomatoes (4) Calum Cooper Source (Scotland) There’s such conviction in its refusal to bend to convention that I find it hard not to admire the film in some way, shape or form. Rated: 4/5 Jul 14, 2024 Full Review High Life | Rotten Tomatoes (5) Paul Kanieski KSQD Community Radio Composed of equal parts mystery, thriller and speculative fiction, High Life starts off slowly but rewards patience, gradually working towards a finale which weaves elements of Interstellar and 2001: A Space Odyssey into something uniquely Claire Denis. Jul 19, 2023 Full Review High Life | Rotten Tomatoes (6) Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review It may be too lofty to call High Life a microcosm of humanity; then again, it may not be. Denis seems to liken the isolation of a few people trapped on a ship hurtling through space to the entire human experience. Rated: 4/4 Mar 3, 2022 Full Review Read all reviews

Beccah J Absolutely disgusting. This film should have never been made. to those who actually bothered to give this a high score, you are disgusting and disturbing and I know what you are. Rated 0.5/5 Stars • Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 10/06/24 Full Review Audience Member This movie is absolutely infested with lazy screenwriting and strange plot choices, and ultimately is one of the worst science fiction films I've watched in the last 5 years. Likely ever. It is abysmal if you want to use your brain while you're watching a sci fi film. If you want something that has space shots that look pretty on screen and mixes in shock scenes of murder and perverse sexual violence and other stuff then great - you can turn your mind off (no, really, I recommend it for this one), and stare. If you want something interesting with a plot that holds up to even 30 seconds of thought, something that you can think about later and still find pleasure in, this is not it. When I think about this movie I'm left with a vague sense of irritation at the universe. Thinking about the plot actually makes me want to throw my hands up in the air, drive to the director's house and bang on her front door until she explains every bad decision here to me and the rest of the science fiction community and apologizes for unleashing this trash into the world. Rated 0.5/5 Stars • Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 10/05/24 Full Review daniel p It is notable to me that my wife couldn't make it 20 minutes into the movie before bouncing. I stuck it out. Not sure what the right call was of our two responses. Rated 3/5 Stars • Rated 3 out of 5 stars 09/29/24 Full Review John A A tone poem-esque thought-provoking experience that I'm sure flew lightyears above general audience's heads upon the release Rated 3.5/5 Stars • Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 07/19/24 Full Review Thomas N Unwatchable. I tried twice. Rated 0.5/5 Stars • Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 07/17/24 Full Review Thomas Z At one point the story inexplicably jumps ahead 10-15 years, bypassing any development of the relationship between the two surviving characters. If only my TV had similarly jumped ahead an hour and a half to spare me the time I wasted watching this! Some great talents here, but overall poor execution of a potentially interesting but poorly executed concept. Rated 1/5 Stars • Rated 1 out of 5 stars 07/03/24 Full Review Read all reviews
